Princess Party Decorations

Princess Invitations

Invitations can be royal scrolls, (try dying with used tea bags) which can be tied with a ribbon or sealed with wax.
Even glass slippers from the dollar shop can serve as invitations (hand-deliver if you live near your party guests).
Calligraphy is great and glitter pens can add a bit of Sparkle to the invites too.
On the invitations request for the Princesses to wear their “Formal/Regal attire”, (most young girls have a fancy dress they can wear).

Decor

  • Balloon Arches are very Festive and give a real sense of “pomp and circumstance”.
  • Cheap silk flowers are fun.
  • “Royal Bunting” can be made by cutting triangles of plastic tablecloth or fabric and stapling them to a cord/string that can be strung up, (similar to what you see at car dealerships).
  • Castle “Torches” can be made from empty paper cups glued to the end of empty paper towel rolls spray painted black with a little bit of red tissue paper sticking out of the cup.
  • Walls can be decorated with a Royal Emblem or just an “HRH” (Her Royal Highness).
  • Outside or Inside you can put a stuffed toy/cardboard cut-out frog … with a “Kiss Me!” sign.
  • Any mirrors in the house can be written on (lipstick?) or have a sign affixed .. “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…Who’s the Fairest of them All!”
  • Take a Large Chair and Dress it up to Make a “Throne” for the Birthday Child (You can cover it in fabric, attach bows and ribbons…the sky’s the limit).
  • Sprinkle silk flower petals, confetti and glitter on the table and try playing Regal Classical Music (such as the Nutcracker Suite, Swan Lake … Handel’s Water Music…. Etc. ).
  • Mini Christmas Lights can be strung up to great effect.
  • Royal “Pennants” can be made from old tablecloths/sheets/plastic sheeting/paper.
  • Anything can be set up in “Swags” (Tulle can be especially nice if you can get it cheaply / happen to have it around the house).

Welcoming Guests

  • When the Guests make a “Grand Entrance” announce the child with their “Royal Name” (see Party Help under Party Starters) … use a Kazoo, Bell, Xylophone .. whatever noisemaker you have.
  • As the children enter the party site , you can throw confetti on them.
  • The children can be greeted by a “Court Jester” or a “Fairy Godmother” .

Castleworks

  • Appliance Stores often have large boxes that they will give to you for free/a nominal fee. These can be painted with house paint (large DIY Stores often have “mis-tints” paint for super cheap). Paint the castle “walls” a solid colour and then use a square sponge to sponge paint on “bricks”.
  • Appliance boxes can be cut into a full free-standing “Castle”, or a Castle to stick on the Wall, or just “Turret Tops” (for over doorways).
  • With a large door sized cardboard piece make a a “Drawbridge” (with Ropes on the side).
  • Use Cardboard to Create a Large Royal Crest for the wall/entranceway.

Princess Party Activities

  • The kids could try sitting on pillows to see which one has a dried pea under it.
  • Videotape the princesses and ask them questions about their duties and what laws they would have in their kingdoms (very cute).
  • Make a Pinata Dragon and then “Slay the Dragon” .
  • Read the children the “Paper Bag Princess” a fine book by Robert Munsch.
  • As a craft, have the children make a “castle” out of sugar cubes with icing as “glue”. (This could be done beforehand and used as a decoration). Castles can be made out of cookies (square), and assembled with icing “glue”.
  • Play Queenie Queenie.

Queenie Queenie

One person is “Queenie” and “Queenie” turns her back on the others and throws a ball (behind herself). The kids scramble to get the ball and the one who has it puts both arms behind her back (trying to keep the fact that she has the ball a secret.) All the kids line up and sing (Queenie then turns around to watch)
“Queenie, queenie Who has the ball? …. See I haven’t got it ….I haven’t got it … I haven’t got it at all!”
The whole time they are saying/singing their innocence they are showing their open (empty) hands ….one hand at a time…..(The one that has the ball has to try to look convincing and not fumble or drop the ball). If Queenie guesses correctly while she continues her reign.

Royal School

  • Send the little princesses to “Royal School” where they learn how to curtsey, drink with your pinkie finger out, walk with a book on their head (“princess posture”).
  • Have a “Royal Salon” where the children have their hair, “make-up” and nails done and they can don stick on “Earrings”.
  • Have the children play relay races with books on their heads (demonstrating their “princess posture”) or try a dressing relay whereby they have to dress up in garb and walk in high heels then remove the garb and heels … so that the next person can dress up.
  • The children can make necklaces very easily with Jewelry cord and beads and a couple “jump rings” .

Princess Party Food

  • Try serving “petits fours” or rolled up tea sandwiches on a serving tray
  • Make a very nice multi-tiered serving tray by gluing a fancy old plate (check the thrift store) to a the bottom of a bud vase (or similar item) and then the other plate on top of the vase.
  • For food, you can serve a “six course” dinner …. (to make it extra fancy…. Put tiny portions of food on large plates and make a big fuss when you serve the dish.).
  • Use fancy plates and wine glasses to serve the food
  • Have a “butler” ham it up with a towel over his arm and “wait on” the royal guests
