Happy Queen Victoria Day! Queen Victoria (the first Queen of Canada) was born in 1819 and became a Canadian holiday in 1845 (and a legal day off in 1901). This is primarily a Canadian Holiday (although we have heard that it is celebrated in parts of Scotland). The young Queen Victoria was known as “Drina” as a child (and spoke German until she was 3).

Firefighter’s Day!
It’s international Firefighter’s Day!
The First proposal for such a day was made in 1999 after a tragic fire in 1998 in Australia in which 5 firefighter’s lost their lives.
May 4th was chosen as it is the Birthday of St. Florian (the patron saint of firefighters). St Florian was a firefighter during the time of the Roman Empire.
Many Fire Stations observe the “Sound Off” which is 30 seconds of Sirens followed by 1 minute of Silence at noon on the first Sunday of May.
