Gumdrop Cake Recipe for Gumdrop Day!

Today is Gumdrop Day! Gumdrops became a popular  candy in the latter half of the 19th century …the candy continued to be an American classic for decades, (there is even a “Gumdrop Mountain” in the 1945 Board Game Candyland)

Goody goody Gumdrops… Below is a great Gumdrop cake Recipe!

  • 1 lb baking gums (cut in half)
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • dash of slat
  • 3/4 cup of buttermilk (or sour milk)

(to make sour milk:  add 2 1/2 tsps of vinegar or lemon juice to milk)

Beat butter, sugar and eggs. Add dry ingredients alternatively with the sour milk.
Bake in 9″ X 5″ loaf pan, greased.
Bake in 325*F oven 1-1/2 hours. Let cake stand 2 days prior to cutting. Freezes well and the recipe doubles well.
